WAYNE PEARCE BIOGRAPHY

SYDNEY BASED

Wayne was born and raised in the inner city suburb of Balmain, and played 188 premiership games for the Tigers between 1980 and my retirement in 1990. He was captain of the club for seven seasons, including four successive Panasonic Cup Finals (1985-1988) and two grand finals (1988 and 1989).

At representative level, Wayne played fifteen State of Origins for New South Wales. He was the captain of the NSW Blues from 1985 to 1988, including the first ever State of Origin clean-sweep in 1986.

Wayne also played eighteen Test matches for Australia. On the 1982 “Invincibles” Kangaroo Tour, he was voted best player on the tour and in the 1984 Ashes campaign against Great Britain, he was again voted player of the series.

In 1985, Wayne won the Rothman’s Medal (Rugby League’s equivalent of the Brownlow Medal) as the best player in the game.

Former team-mate and fellow international Steve Roach gives Wayne a good wrap – he said, “Junior was the toughest bloke I ever saw. He had a strength of character and a never-say-die spirit that was indomitable.”

Wayne  began his coaching career with the Balmain Tigers in 1994 and retired as Club Coach at the end of the 2000 season. His efforts as Club Coach were acknowledged by the representative selectors, and he was appointed as the Blues Coach in 1999.

After winning the State of Origin series 3-0 as a coach in 2000, Wayne became the only person to both captain and coach a Series clean-sweep against Queensland.

He has been widely regarded as an innovator, both as a player and as a coach. Wayne’s university science and psychology studies were a platform from which he sought to develop more effective and improved methods of preparing for competition.

TOPICS & WORKSHOPS

We recently had the pleasure of engaging Wayne Pearce as a key note speaker and facilitator at out biennial conference. His presentation was enlightening, motivating, humourous and very entertaining. He was able to get the key messages across to the entire audience of 450 people. I would highly recommend Wayne as a key note presenter and also encourage anyone to participate in one of his seminars which will benefit you both personally and professionally`` — David Ackery (Executive Director Harvey Norman)
